AI Mode is a distinct search experience inside the Facebook search bar, powered by Meta AI, that returns a synthesized conversational answer to a plain-language question instead of a list of links. Announced on Meta's newsroom on June 15, 2026, it draws on public posts, Groups discussions, and Reels to ground answers in what people are publicly saying, and supports follow-up questions in the same interface.

Meta AI is a conversational assistant powered by Muse Spark (Meta Superintelligence Labs). It offers Instant mode for quick everyday answers and Thinking mode for complex multi-step reasoning. A 'Contemplating' mode that orchestrates multiple agents in parallel has been referenced but is not confirmed in live official docs as of June 2026.

Meta AI is embedded natively across Meta's family of apps. Users can invoke it in WhatsApp chats, Instagram DMs and search, Messenger, Facebook search bars and feed, and Threads via @meta.ai mentions — without leaving the app.

The Discover feed is a social surface inside the Meta AI app where users can browse how others use Meta AI, get prompt inspiration, and remix other users' prompts for their own purposes. Conversations are private by default and only appear in Discover if the user chooses to share.

Meta AI can generate and collaboratively edit text documents — letters, travel planners, stories, and more — in a Canvas workspace on meta.ai. The editor supports text formatting, style rewrites (formal/casual), version history, and insertion of AI-generated images via the 'Imagine' toolbar.

Users can upload photos, documents, spreadsheets, PDFs, and other files into a Meta AI chat and ask questions about the contents. Meta AI can extract insights, compare images side by side, summarize documents, and provide instant visual analysis.

Meta AI lets users edit existing or generated images via text prompt, apply preset Restyle transformations (styles, moods, lighting, colors, backdrops), animate still images into looping clips, and use the Swap feature to place people into scenes. Lip-sync adds audio to animated images.

Users can generate images by typing a prompt beginning with 'imagine' or 'create an image'; Meta AI returns multiple variations. Generated images can be turned into short animated videos ('vibes') by adding motion, optional music, or voiceovers.

Incognito Chat lets users talk to Meta AI privately — conversations are processed in a secure environment (Private Processing) that even Meta cannot access. Messages are not saved after the session ends and do not appear in chat history.

Ray-Ban Meta (and Oakley Meta) smart glasses run Meta AI with egocentric camera vision. Users say 'Hey Meta, look and...' to ask about anything in their field of view — identifying objects, reading text, translating signs, recognizing landmarks — without reaching for a phone.

Meta AI can remember personal details users share — preferences, allergies, relationships, interests — and apply them in future conversations. Memory is synced across Meta accounts linked in Accounts Center, so a detail shared in Instagram chat is recalled in WhatsApp.

Meta AI's core features are free across all surfaces. Paid Meta One personal tiers (Plus and Premium; press-reported at $7.99/month and $19.99/month — Meta's Help Center confirms the plans but publishes no prices) unlock expanded monthly AI usage allowance, deeper reasoning ('thinking mode' on the Meta AI app and meta.ai), and expanded access to advanced image/video models; the free tier remains for casual use. Separate Meta One creator/business tiers (Essential, Advanced, Expert, Max) also exist but are not AI-specific.

Meta AI retrieves up-to-date information from the web and surfaces relevant public posts from Instagram, Facebook, and Threads alongside answers, providing socially grounded, current responses with clickable source links, tables, and charts.

Meta AI offers a conversational voice mode where users speak prompts instead of typing. Powered by Muse Spark, users can interrupt mid-sentence, switch topics, or change languages mid-conversation. Live AI mode extends voice to real-time camera-based answers.
