Microsoft Copilot capabilities

Copilot (copilot.microsoft.com) provides a general-purpose AI chat assistant for writing, brainstorming, research, and Q&A. Responses are grounded by Bing web search, with cited sources returned alongside answers.

Copilot Daily delivers a personalized briefing of news and weather, drawing only from authorized sources such as Reuters, Axel Springer, Hearst Magazines, USA TODAY Network, and Financial Times. Users can customize topic preferences.

Copilot Pages is a persistent, editable canvas where users can save AI responses, draft and organize content, and collaborate with others in real time. Pages can be exported to Word or PowerPoint and shared via link.

Copilot Search is a dedicated search mode within Copilot that blends traditional Bing search with generative AI to deliver cited, in-depth answers. Responses are adaptive — concise for simple queries, detailed for complex ones — and include suggested related topics for exploration.

Copilot Vision lets users share their screen, a browser tab, or a live camera feed with Copilot for real-time visual analysis, guidance, and Q&A. It acts as a passive second set of eyes — it reads and discusses what it sees but does not click, type, or scroll on the user's behalf.

Copilot Voice lets users hold natural, hands-free spoken conversations with the AI in 50+ languages. Voice responses include web retrieval so answers reflect live information. An optional animated avatar called Mico provides empathetic visual feedback during voice sessions.

Copilot is built into Windows 11 as a standalone app accessible from the taskbar, Start menu, or dedicated Copilot keyboard key. It offers OS-level assistance including system settings adjustments, local file search, screenshot capture, and screen-sharing via Copilot Vision.

Users can upload documents and images directly into a Copilot chat session for analysis, Q&A, summarization, and data extraction. Copilot can process the uploaded content alongside the conversation.

Copilot generates and edits images from text prompts using OpenAI's GPT-4o image-generation model (consumer Copilot upgraded from DALL-E 3 to GPT-4o in May 2025; Microsoft Designer/Bing Image Creator retained DALL-E 3, since deprecated), accessible via the 'Copilot Imagine' interface. Generated images are available for 30 days.

Copilot can remember key facts and preferences shared across conversations — such as preferred communication style, ongoing projects, or personal interests — and use them to tailor future responses. A 'visual Narrative' on mobile lets users review what Copilot has stored about them.

Copilot is available as a native app on iOS, Android, Windows, and macOS, enabling chat, Voice, Vision, image generation, and file upload on the go with a consistent cross-platform experience.

Copilot retains past conversations so users can return to them, continue where they left off, or reference earlier exchanges. History is unified across Microsoft app surfaces so users can find chats regardless of where they started.

Copilot consumer operates across four tiers: free (copilot.microsoft.com), and three paid Microsoft 365 plans (Personal, Family, Premium) that unlock higher usage limits, Microsoft 365 app integration, and exclusive features like Designer and advanced AI agents.

Consumer Copilot users have granular controls over data retention, model training opt-out, personalization memory, and conversation history deletion. All controls apply to personal Microsoft account holders only — not enterprise Entra ID accounts.

Think Deeper is Copilot's advanced reasoning mode for complex, multi-step problems such as coding challenges, mathematics, interview prep, and nuanced decision-making. The model takes extra time to plan, gather context, and verify its reasoning before responding.
