ProjectsProjects

Both products use Projects as named workspaces. Recreate each ChatGPT Project in Claude: create a new Project, copy over the project instructions, and upload reference files to the Project knowledge base. Conversations within a Claude Project inherit instructions and can reference knowledge files, mirroring ChatGPT Project behavior. The reverse migration follows the same steps in the opposite direction.

Gotchas

Warning: Projects are available on the Free plan in BOTH products: ChatGPT Projects are included on Free, and Claude Projects are available to all users including Free (free Claude accounts can create up to five projects). Paid Claude plans add enhanced project knowledge/RAG capabilities.
Warning: Claude gives each project its own separate memory space and dedicated project summary, kept separate from non-project chats; in ChatGPT, project-only memory is available only on Business and Enterprise (when workspace Memory is enabled), so individual Free/Plus/Pro plans won't have ChatGPT's project-scoped memory.
Warning: Shared/collaborative Projects on Claude require a Team or Enterprise plan; ChatGPT project sharing is available more broadly, including for Free, Plus, Pro, and Go users.

Custom instructionsStyles

The 'How would you like ChatGPT to respond?' field in ChatGPT custom instructions maps to Claude's response-style customization. IMPORTANT: as of 2026 Claude is retiring its standalone Custom Styles feature and migrating it into Skills; existing custom styles auto-migrate to Skills (disabled by default until you enable them under Customize → Skills). Going forward, extract tone, format, length, and structure cues from the ChatGPT field and capture them as a Claude Skill, activated in a chat via the /{name}-style slash command (the style name is lowercased, spaces become hyphens, punctuation/emoji/accents are stripped, and '-style' is appended — e.g. 'Concise Pirate' becomes /concise-pirate-style). Moving from Claude to ChatGPT: distill the Skill's instructions into ChatGPT's 'How would you like ChatGPT to respond?' field (1,500-character limit).

Gotchas

Warning: ChatGPT combines factual context ('What to know about you') and response style ('How to respond') in one feature; Claude separates these into account-wide profile instructions ('Instructions for Claude', the facts/preferences half) and a separate style mechanism (tone/format). This pattern covers only the style half — see pattern:chatgpt__claude/persistent-user-preferences for the facts half.
Warning: Claude's standalone Custom Styles are being retired and folded into Skills in 2026 (default styles Concise/Explanatory/Formal go away; Learning is preserved as a Skill). Migrated styles arrive disabled by default and must be enabled under Customize → Skills, then are invoked per-chat via a /{name}-style slash command rather than a Styles picker. ChatGPT custom instructions are global with only an on/off toggle per chat.
Warning: ChatGPT's 'How to respond' field has a 1,500-character limit; a Claude Style/Skill has its own separate limit. Long or detailed style instructions may need trimming when migrating in either direction.
