Both tools offer a multi-step agentic research mode that browses the web, synthesizes sources, and produces a cited report. ChatGPT Deep Research is activated from the composer tools menu (+) or by typing /Deepresearch; Grok DeepSearch is a toggle button in the chat interface on grok.com. To switch from ChatGPT to Grok: Deep Research reports can be downloaded as Markdown, Word, or PDF — save these before moving workflows over, as there is no cross-platform import. On Grok, enable the DeepSearch toggle before submitting your research query. Grok DeepSearch additionally searches the X post firehose in real time, giving it an edge for social-signal and breaking-news queries. For higher rigor, Grok's DeeperSearch runs multiple verification agents in parallel — toggle it instead of DeepSearch for peer-review-style outputs. To go the other direction (Grok → ChatGPT), note that ChatGPT allows you to review and edit the research plan before execution, which helps constrain scope in a way DeepSearch does not.
- Warning: ChatGPT Deep Research enforces a monthly quota (listed as Limited on Free/Go, included on Plus/Pro); Grok DeepSearch quota specifics are not publicly documented but free-tier access is rate-limited.
- Warning: ChatGPT Deep Research supports MCP/connected-app sources and site restriction filters (Sites → Manage sites); Grok DeepSearch has no equivalent source-restriction control.
- Warning: Grok's DeeperSearch (the heavier verification variant) is only available on paid tiers (SuperGrok $30/month or X Premium+ $40/month) and may not appear in the X-embedded surface.
- Warning: ChatGPT report output includes a table of contents and activity history; Grok's output format is a flat cited summary — downstream templates expecting ChatGPT's structured format need adjustment.
Both products support persistent custom instructions that shape tone, format, and behavior across all conversations. ChatGPT's instructions are set at Settings → Personalization (web/desktop) or Settings → Customize ChatGPT (mobile); Grok's are in Grok Settings under a dedicated Custom Instructions field. To migrate from ChatGPT to Grok: open ChatGPT Settings → Personalization, copy the text from both custom instruction fields (what to know about you; how to respond), then paste into Grok's Custom Instructions field — Grok's 12,000-character limit is far larger than ChatGPT's 1,500-character cap, so no truncation is needed. To go the other direction: copy Grok's instructions and trim to 1,500 characters for ChatGPT; prioritize the most impactful directives. On Grok, also consider converting reusable workflows into Skills (Settings → Skills), which let Grok auto-activate named capabilities beyond what static instructions can do.
- Warning: ChatGPT custom instructions apply immediately to all existing chats; Grok custom instructions apply to new conversations only — existing chats on Grok retain the old instruction set.
- Warning: ChatGPT's character limit is 1,500 characters per field; Grok's is 12,000 characters — instructions migrating from Grok to ChatGPT will almost certainly require manual trimming.

Both products offer native text-to-image generation and editing directly in chat. ChatGPT uses Images 2.0 (gpt-image-2) and Grok uses the Aurora model via Grok Imagine. To migrate a workflow: download all generated images from ChatGPT's Images library before switching (images are not exportable via API after the fact); rebuild any saved prompt templates as plain text you paste into Grok's prompt field. In Grok, trigger generation by asking 'generate an image of…' or navigating to grok.com/imagine. Both support image editing — ChatGPT via its selection-based inpainting editor; Grok via Grok Imagine's edit and variations interface. For API-based image generation, switch the model parameter from gpt-image-2 to grok-imagine-image (standard) or grok-imagine-image-quality (higher quality) in the xAI API.
- Warning: ChatGPT's 'Images with thinking' mode (reasoning-driven, web-grounded generation) is a Plus/Pro feature with no direct Grok equivalent — Aurora does not expose a reasoning toggle.
- Warning: Grok free tier caps image generation at approximately 10 images every 2 hours; ChatGPT free tier also rate-limits but via a different quota system — heavy users may see different throttle patterns.
- Warning: ChatGPT Images 2.0 auto-saves generations to an Images library in-product; Grok has no equivalent persistent gallery — download images immediately after generation.

Both tools build a persistent memory store that auto-applies recalled facts to future conversations. To move from ChatGPT to Grok: export your current ChatGPT memory by going to Settings → Personalization → Manage memories, reviewing each entry, then manually recreating the most important facts in a Grok opening prompt or waiting for Grok to build its own store organically. On the Grok side, confirm memory is enabled under Data Controls. To move from Grok to ChatGPT: visit Grok Data Controls to list stored memories, note the key facts, then seed ChatGPT via Settings → Personalization → Manage memories → Add memory, or paste them into Custom Instructions as a 'things to know about me' block. In both directions there is no export API — the transfer is manual copy-paste of individual memory items.
- Warning: ChatGPT has two coexisting memory systems (legacy saved memories and the new auto-updating Memory Summary); migrating users should check both under Settings → Personalization before leaving.
- Warning: Grok memory is unavailable in the EU and UK due to regulatory restrictions; users in those regions cannot replicate this feature on Grok at all.
- Warning: ChatGPT's new Memory system shows per-response Memory Sources, giving more transparency into which memories influenced an answer — Grok has no equivalent attribution UI.

Both tools support scheduling AI-driven prompts to run automatically at a specified time and delivering results via push notification or email. ChatGPT Tasks are managed at Settings → Notifications → Manage tasks or chatgpt.com/schedules; Grok Tasks are accessible at grok.com/tasks and in the left sidebar. To migrate: in ChatGPT, go to chatgpt.com/schedules and note each task's name, instructions, and schedule (one-off, daily, weekly, monthly); recreate them in Grok by typing 'remind me to…' or 'every weekday at 8am…' in Grok chat, which auto-registers a task. Grok task confirmations appear in the left sidebar at grok.com/tasks. To go the other direction (Grok → ChatGPT), review grok.com/tasks, copy each task's description, then ask ChatGPT to set up the same schedule. ChatGPT supports editing task name, instructions, and schedule after creation; Grok task editing support is more limited.
- Warning: ChatGPT Tasks require a Plus, Pro, Business, or Enterprise plan — they are not available on Free or Go; Grok Tasks have a lower entry bar (free tier gets a small quota) but paid tiers get higher limits.

Both tools support real-time bidirectional voice conversations on iOS and Android. ChatGPT's Advanced Voice Mode is accessed by tapping the voice icon in the ChatGPT mobile app composer or on chatgpt.com; Grok voice mode is in the Grok iOS/Android app. To switch from ChatGPT to Grok: there is no persistent voice history to migrate — each conversation is session-based. Install the Grok app, ensure you have a SuperGrok subscription, and tap the mic icon. Re-configure any Custom Instructions you relied on during ChatGPT voice sessions (ChatGPT voice honors Custom Instructions and Memory; Grok voice inherits global Custom Instructions as well). For developers migrating a Realtime API voice integration: switch from OpenAI's Realtime API to xAI's Voice Agent API (WebSocket-based) using grok-voice-think-fast-1.0 (current flagship) or grok-voice-fast-1.0 (deprecated legacy); the tool-use, web search, and X search capabilities are available within Voice Agent sessions.
