ChatGPT Projects (GA since late 2024) is a flat workspace: a folder of chats with project-scoped files and project-scoped custom instructions. The closest Gemini analogue is now Gemini notebooks (announced Apr 8 2026): you move past chats into a notebook, give it custom instructions, and add files (docs/PDFs) for context, and notebooks sync with NotebookLM. Notebooks rolled out first to Google AI Ultra/Pro/Plus on the web, expanding to mobile, more of Europe, and free users in the following weeks - confirm current availability for the user's tier/region. (A custom Gem with Knowledge files + instructions is a secondary equivalent that carries 'project files + project instructions' but does not group chats.)
- Warning: Gems alone do not group chats; each conversation with a Gem is still a standalone chat. For the 'all chats about topic X in one place' workflow, use a Gemini notebook (which can hold moved-in past chats) rather than a Gem.

ChatGPT keeps full chat history in the sidebar plus a separate 'Memory' store for facts. Gemini keeps history under Gemini Apps Activity (myactivity.google.com/product/gemini) plus a separate 'Saved info' store. To migrate, export ChatGPT data (Settings > Data Controls > Export data) — you'll get a ZIP of all chats; manually re-seed important threads in Gemini if needed. Both products support temporary/incognito chats not saved to history.
- Warning: Gemini's auto-delete granularity is 3 / 18 / 36 months or never. ChatGPT's chat history retention is account-lifetime unless you delete; there is no built-in auto-delete schedule on the consumer side.

Both products offer custom assistants with a name, persistent instructions, knowledge files, and a public gallery. Create a Gem at gemini.google.com > Explore Gems > New Gem (or Gem Manager > Create new Gem) and paste the GPT's system prompt into Instructions, upload the same Knowledge files, and pick an icon. Gemini's public Gem gallery is the analogue of the GPT Store (10,000+ public Gems). Going the other direction: a Gem becomes a Custom GPT via the GPT Builder at chatgpt.com/gpts/editor; reupload knowledge and paste instructions.
