Both tools run multi-step agentic web research that autonomously browses dozens to hundreds of sources and produces a cited report. To migrate from Gemini Deep Research to Grok DeepSearch: on grok.com toggle DeepSearch (or DeeperSearch) before submitting your research prompt instead of selecting Deep Research from the Gemini prompt-bar tool menu; the output format is similar — a synthesised answer with inline citations. Grok additionally searches the X post firehose alongside open-web sources, which is useful for real-time social/news topics but less relevant for academic research. To migrate the reverse direction, enable Deep Research from the Gemini prompt bar, optionally connect Gmail/Drive/NotebookLM sources for grounding that Grok cannot access, and export results to Google Docs.
- Warning: Gemini Deep Research Max (the highest-quality tier, running ~160 searches) is currently in public preview via the paid Gemini API only and is not yet available in the consumer Gemini app; Grok's DeeperSearch is available on grok.com paid tiers today.
- Warning: Gemini Deep Research can ground reports in private Google Workspace sources (Gmail, Drive, Chat, NotebookLM); Grok DeepSearch has no equivalent private-data grounding — it is limited to the open web and X.
- Warning: Grok DeepSearch requires SuperGrok ($30/month) or X Premium+ ($40/month) for full access; free-tier Grok has limited DeepSearch usage. Gemini Deep Research tiers are governed by compute-based multipliers (Free / AI Plus / AI Pro / AI Ultra).
Both tools let you set persistent instructions that apply to every future conversation. To migrate custom instructions from Gemini to Grok: open Grok settings and paste your instructions into the Custom Instructions field (up to 12,000 characters); note that Grok instructions only take effect for new conversations — existing chats retain the old instructions. To migrate from Grok to Gemini: go to gemini.google.com > Menu > Settings & help > Personal Intelligence > Instructions for Gemini and paste your instruction text there; Gemini also supports conversational steering ('remember I prefer concise bullet answers') which Grok does not have as a named feature. Both tools apply instructions automatically to all new chats in the default workspace/session mode.
- Warning: Gemini's 'Instructions for Gemini' are NOT applied in Gems (custom AI assistants) or Live (voice) chats; Grok custom instructions apply to regular conversations but Grok Skills (a newer layer for reusable named workflows) are a separate concept and not equivalent to Gemini's Gems.
- Warning: Grok's custom instructions character limit was reduced to 4,000 in March 2026 when Custom Agents launched, then restored to 12,000; verify the current limit in Grok settings as it may change again.
- Warning: Gemini's personalization features (Instructions for Gemini + Memory) require a personal Google Account (not work/school), the user must be 18+, and Keep Activity must be enabled; Grok custom instructions have no equivalent restrictions.
- Warning: Grok Skills (launched May 2026) extend beyond plain instructions to reusable named capabilities that generate Office-format documents and run automations; Gemini has no direct equivalent to Skills.
Both products support text-to-image generation and image editing directly in chat. To migrate from Gemini to Grok: submit text-to-image prompts in the Grok chat or via the Grok Imagine interface rather than the Gemini prompt bar. Grok uses the Aurora model (autoregressive mixture-of-experts, up to 1024x1024) and supports up to 10 image variations per prompt plus image editing. To migrate from Grok to Gemini: prompt 'generate an image of ...' in any Gemini chat; Gemini uses Nano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image) as default, with Nano Banana Pro available to AI Plus/Pro/Ultra subscribers via the regenerate menu for higher quality and legible text. Both tools watermark all AI-generated images (Gemini uses SynthID invisible + visible watermark; Grok uses Aurora's built-in markings).
- Warning: Gemini image generation is governed by compute-based usage limits (Free 2x standard, paid tiers multiply up); Grok free users receive approximately 10 image generations every 2 hours, with unlimited generation only on SuperGrok ($30/month) and above.
- Warning: Grok Aurora maxes out at 1024x1024 pixels; Gemini does not publish a fixed maximum resolution but Nano Banana Pro targets higher-quality text-in-image rendering.
- Warning: Gemini supports personalized image generation using Google Photos faces (opt-in); Grok has no equivalent personal-photo integration.
- Warning: Grok Imagine also has a developer API for batch image generation ($0.02-$0.05 per image); Gemini exposes image generation through the Gemini API using the Nano Banana model family, not a separate Imagine endpoint.
Both tools maintain persistent memory that carries context across sessions. To migrate from Gemini to Grok: Grok memory is enabled by default for all users on grok.com, iOS, and Android — it picks up facts and preferences automatically from conversations. You can manage stored memory items in Grok > Data Controls, delete individual items, or clear all memory. To migrate from Grok to Gemini: enable Keep Activity and the Memory toggle under Personal Intelligence in Gemini settings; Gemini will then recall past chats to personalize future responses. Before switching, export any critical context manually (Gemini lets you delete or export chats via myactivity.google.com; Grok does not have a bulk-export path for memory items).
- Warning: Grok memory is unavailable in the EU and UK due to regulatory restrictions; Gemini memory (the Personal Intelligence feature) is likewise region-limited — Google notes it is 'not available to everyone at this time'.
- Warning: Gemini's memory (under Personal Intelligence) is separate from its full conversation history (Keep Activity / Gemini Apps Activity); Grok conflates these into a single 'memory' system with no equivalent to Gemini's searchable full-chat history at myactivity.google.com.
- Warning: Grok memory is not exposed in the developer API; Gemini also does not surface conversation history via API.
- Warning: Gemini's help docs note that instructions to forget specific topics don't always work reliably — deleting the relevant chats from activity is the dependable path; Grok lets you delete individual stored memory items precisely.
Both tools provide dedicated project spaces (Gemini calls them Notebooks; Grok calls them Workspaces/Projects) that isolate conversations, files, and custom instructions per project. To migrate from Gemini to Grok: create a Workspace on grok.com, set workspace-scoped custom instructions, and re-upload source files that were attached in your Gemini Notebook (PDFs, docs, spreadsheets — up to 100 MB per file, 100 GB account quota). To migrate from Grok to Gemini: create a new Notebook at gemini.google.com via 'New notebook' in the sidebar, paste your Grok workspace instructions into the notebook-level custom instructions field, and add sources from your device, Google Drive, or URLs (up to 600 sources). Neither tool currently allows direct export of workspace/notebook metadata — you will need to manually recreate instructions and re-upload files.
- Warning: Gemini Notebooks require a Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra subscription on web (free users and mobile are in a later rollout wave); Grok Workspaces appear available to all users but Projects with cloud file integration (e.g., Google Drive sync) are documented as a paid-tier feature.
- Warning: Gemini Notebooks sync bidirectionally with NotebookLM — sources added in a Notebook appear in NotebookLM automatically; Grok has no equivalent cross-product notebook sync.
- Warning: Gemini Notebooks support personal Google Accounts only — work and school Workspace accounts are explicitly not supported. Grok Workspaces do not have this restriction.
- Warning: Grok Workspaces isolate memory and instructions so context does not bleed between projects, but Grok memory (which learns from conversations) does not differentiate between workspaces unless the Projects cloud-integration layer is used.
Both tools generate short video clips (approximately 10 seconds) with natively synthesised audio from text prompts, and both support video editing workflows. To migrate from Gemini to Grok: use the Grok Imagine interface on grok.com to submit your text-to-video prompt; the Extend from Frame feature lets you chain additional 6-10 second segments for sequences up to ~15 seconds. To migrate from Grok to Gemini: invoke video generation from the Gemini prompt bar via the video-generation tool (currently using Gemini Omni/Omni Flash) or use Google Flow for higher-volume production; both paths require a paid plan. Neither tool supports video longer than ~15 seconds natively in a single generation pass.
- Warning: Gemini video generation requires an AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra subscription — the Free tier has no video generation; Grok requires X Premium ($8/month) or higher for Grok Imagine video access, with the best quality (720p, 100 renders/day) gated to SuperGrok ($30/month).
- Warning: Grok Imagine video is capped at 720p/10 seconds in the standard consumer interface; Gemini Omni generates roughly 10-second clips but Google does not publish a hard resolution ceiling for the consumer app.
- Warning: Gemini uses SynthID watermarks on all outputs; Grok video outputs are watermarked but the exact marking scheme is not publicly documented.
