Midjourney's Describe feature reverse-engineers a text prompt from an uploaded image, returning four example prompts that capture style, composition, and subject — useful for recreating a look from an inspiration image. Midjourney's Blend merges 2-5 uploaded images into a single composite by combining their visual styles and concepts. In Recraft, the analogous workflow uses POST /prompts/enhance (pass an image URL or short prompt to get an enriched, detailed prompt) and POST /images/imageToImage (pass a source image with a text prompt and a strength parameter to generate a variation or style-transfer). To migrate from Midjourney Describe: export the reference image, send it to Recraft's prompts/enhance endpoint to retrieve a refined generation prompt, then use it for Recraft text-to-image generation. For Blend equivalents in Recraft, use POST /images/imageToImage with one of the source images as the base and reference a style from the second image via a custom style — Recraft has no exact N-image merge endpoint, so blends must be approximated through style transfer and prompt engineering. Going the other direction, use Midjourney's /describe command on a Recraft-generated image to extract a Midjourney-compatible prompt.
- Warning: Recraft does not have a direct multi-image Blend endpoint equivalent to Midjourney's /blend; blending multiple images requires a workaround using imageToImage plus custom styles, which does not faithfully reproduce the pixel-level merge that Midjourney Blend produces.
- Warning: Midjourney Describe generates four different prompt suggestions per call and is explicitly described as inspirational rather than a precise reconstruction; Recraft's POST /prompts/enhance is prompt-expansion rather than image-to-prompt reverse engineering, so the two features are not fully equivalent.
- Warning: Midjourney V8.1 updated Describe to produce longer, more detailed prompts; if migrating a Describe-driven workflow, results will differ from earlier model outputs and may need additional prompt tuning in Recraft.
Both platforms offer post-generation upscaling with two quality modes. In Midjourney, after generating an image, click Upscale (Subtle) to double the resolution with minimal changes, or Upscale (Creative) to double the size while adding AI-generated detail improvements that can correct artifacts like awkward hands or odd facial expressions; output is ~2048px from a ~1024px base. In Recraft, upscaling is available via the API: POST /images/crispUpscale for a clean resolution increase analogous to Midjourney's Subtle mode, and POST /images/creativeUpscale for a detail-adding upscale analogous to Midjourney's Creative mode. To migrate: download the Midjourney image (PNG via gallery), then pass the file to Recraft's crispUpscale or creativeUpscale endpoint. Going the other direction, Recraft-generated images can be uploaded to Midjourney's web Editor and upscaled there using the standard Upscale buttons. Note that Midjourney V8.1 reduces the need for upscaling by offering native 2K HD output via the --hd flag, which may make the separate upscale step unnecessary for V8.1 workflows.
- Warning: Midjourney V8.1's --hd parameter generates native 2K output at 4x the standard credit cost, which often makes the separate upscale step redundant; workflows relying on the Subtle/Creative upscale buttons may need to be reconsidered when migrating from V7 to V8.1.
- Warning: Recraft's upscaling endpoints are REST API only and are not available as a one-click button in Recraft Studio; teams without developer resources will need to use the API or wait for Studio UI support.
- Warning: Midjourney Creative Upscale can significantly alter the image's details beyond simple resolution increase; Recraft's creativeUpscale behavior may differ in how aggressively it modifies content, requiring side-by-side testing before switching.
Both platforms support inpainting (selective region regeneration) and outpainting (canvas expansion beyond original edges). In Midjourney, inpainting is done via the web Editor: open any generated image, use the Erase brush to select a region (recommended 20-50% of total area) and Restore to protect areas, then reprompt. Outpainting uses Zoom Out to expand the canvas and Pan to add directional content. In Recraft, the equivalent API endpoints are POST /images/inpaint (provide a mask and prompt to regenerate a region), POST /images/outpaint (expand the canvas), and POST /images/eraseRegion (remove a region via mask). Via Recraft Studio on the web, the same tools are available without code. To migrate an inpainting workflow from Midjourney to Recraft: export the source image from Midjourney (PNG via gallery download), upload to Recraft Studio or pass it to the API's imageToImage or inpaint endpoint with your region mask and new prompt. To go the other direction, export the Recraft output as PNG and open it in the Midjourney web Editor to continue editing with Vary Region or Zoom Out.
- Warning: Midjourney's Editor (Vary Region, Pan, Zoom Out, Smart Select) is web-exclusive — the Discord bot has no inpaint or outpaint functionality; switching requires migrating work to midjourney.com first.
- Warning: Recraft's inpaint and outpaint endpoints are API-only features not yet surfaced in the Recraft Studio web UI as of mid-2026; non-technical users cannot access them without writing API calls.
- Warning: All Midjourney Editor operations consume GPU hours at standard rates, which can add up quickly for iterative editing; Recraft API operations are billed per credit from the account balance.
Both tools let you lock a visual aesthetic and apply it consistently across generations. In Midjourney, Style Reference uses --sref <URL or code> to apply color grading, lighting, and texture from a reference image without copying its content; the companion Personalization (--p) builds a longer-term aesthetic profile from rated images. In Recraft, Custom Styles are created by uploading up to five reference images in Recraft Studio, adjusting weighting sliders per reference, and optionally adding a style-level prompt — the saved style is then applied to any future generation. To migrate: export your Midjourney reference images (download from moodboards or saved collections on midjourney.com), then upload them as a Recraft custom style. Choose 'Style essentials' mode to replicate color and texture focus, or 'Style and composition' if layout matching is important. Saved Recraft styles can be shared across a team, which is closer to Midjourney's Rooms collaboration model than to Discord-only Sref codes. Going from Recraft to Midjourney: apply the same reference images as --sref URLs and combine with --stylize to control influence strength.
- Warning: Midjourney's --sref V7 (sv 7, released ~April 2026) is 4x faster and 4x cheaper than earlier Sref; V8.1 does not support --oref (Omni Reference) so character consistency from a reference image requires staying on V7 or a future V8 update.
- Warning: Recraft Custom Styles require uploading your own reference images (up to five); you cannot apply a Recraft preset library style and a custom style simultaneously in the same way Midjourney can blend multiple Srefs with weighting.
- Warning: Recraft custom style creation and team sharing are paid-plan features; Recraft free accounts do not get private generation, meaning custom style outputs appear in the public community gallery.
Both tools accept a natural-language text prompt and return raster image output. In Midjourney (web or Discord), submit a prompt via the web app or /imagine and receive four 1024px variants in ~4 s (SD) or ~12 s (HD via --hd). In Recraft Studio, type a prompt into the generation panel and select the V4.1 model (or V4.1 Utility for product shots / front-facing compositions). Recraft returns up to two images per prompt on the free tier. To migrate a prompt library: paste prompts directly — Midjourney's parameter suffixes (--ar, --stylize, etc.) must be removed and re-expressed through Recraft's UI controls (aspect ratio selector, style preset, etc.). For teams switching from Midjourney to Recraft, start in Recraft Studio with V4.1 for creative work and switch to V4.1 Utility for mockups. Going the other direction, Recraft's prompt-enhance endpoint (POST /prompts/enhance) can enrich short prompts before porting them into Midjourney.
- Warning: Midjourney V8.1 generates four image variants per prompt; Recraft free tier returns only two images per prompt and generations appear publicly in the community gallery until upgraded to a paid plan.
